MORE than 20 members of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) are under investigation for absenteeism.

Senior Supt. Bartolome Tobias, ICPO director, said 26 police officers will be made to explain why they are absent from their patrol assignments and the Monday flag raising ceremonies.

Tobias said they discovered the absentee cops during their surprise inspection and accounting of police personnel deployed to community police assistance centers (Compact) and patrol assignments.

“Some of them are not in their posts. They go missing and leave their assignments behind, creating an impression that there are no cops manning the streets and public places,” Tobias said.

Tobias said Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas, PNP regional director, ordered the strict accounting of police personnel following complaints of the lack of cops on the streets.

The ICPO chief they will make the 26 cops explain why they were absent from their assigned posts.

“Maybe some of them were sent on errands or encountered emergency situations. If they can justify their absence, they are safe. But if they cannot explain it substantially, then they will be suspended for neglect of duty,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tobias said Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. pledged to help the ICPO in maintaining peace and order in the city.

“There was no concrete commitment but Secretary Gonzalez said they will find solutions to our problems and needs,” Tobias said.

Gonzalez earlier said he has submitted a list of cops alleged involved in illegal drugs and other crimes to the Department of Interior and Local Government.

The justice department chief said he will push for the transfer of erring cops to Mindanao which is torn by renewed conflict between the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

THE Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office (Noppo) has ordered an investigation on the vigilante group that claimed responsibility for the death of two suspected drug peddlers in the island.

Senior Supt. Rosendo Franco, Noppo director, said they are verifying reports of ABS-CBN Bacolod on the purported vigilante group operating in the province.

The Lopez-owned TV station received over the weekend information from a male caller that his vigilante group liquidated Benedicto Uy and Glover Arak who are involved in petty crimes and illegal drug trade in the province.

The caller claimed that Uy was a snatcher and pickpocket while Arak is selling illegal drugs.

Uy and Arak were found dead in Bago City last week. They succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in their bodies and heads.

The alleged vigilantes had threatened to kill rugby sniffers in Bacolod City.

Franco said the actions of the vigilante group are unjustified even if they kill criminal elements. “They can be charged for what they are doing,” he said.

Franco told the vigilantes to leave law enforcement and punishment of criminals to proper authorities.

THE management of Savannah Subdivision in Mandurriao, Iloilo City has sacked its security agency after one of its guards was involved in the death of resident Claire Nueros last month.

Engineer Ernesto Concio Jr., production head of Savannah Communities, said they terminated the services of Elegance Security Agency to show that they don’t tolerate criminality in their subdivision projects.

Concio said Elegance guards will only render duty until end of this month.

Nueros was found dead inside her house in Savannah Subdivision at Brgy. Abilay Norte, Oton, Iloilo last August 3.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Oton police station have tagged Elegance guard Severino Sangrador and brothers Niño and Severo Segumban as the prime suspects in the Nueros case.

Segumban’s brother Benigno identified the suspects after the police recovered the weapons allegedly used in the crime and items stolen from Nueros’ house.

Concio said they also heightened their security setup inside the subdivision by deploying more guards and installing lights in dark portions of the gated community.

The developer also put up barriers in the Abilay portion of the subdivision to prevent intrusion in the residential area.

Capiz Board Member Esteban Contreras, owner of Elegance Security Agency, said he understands the decision of the Savannah management even as he urged Sangrador to surrender.

Iloilo Provincial Police Office director Ricardo dela Paz said they will help in the hunt for Sangrador and Segumban.

Dela Paz said the suspects cannot hide forever “because we will eventually catch up with them.”

Senior Insp. Vicente Castor, Oton police chief, said they have filed robbery with homicide charges against Benigno Segumban who hid the weapons and stolen items.

Castor said they will file separate charges for rape with homicide against the other suspects once they arrested.
