FOUR big associations of Filipino-Chinese communities here in Iloilo have joined forces for the staging of what is deemed as the biggest Chinese New Year celebration on February 12.

Expected guests include Dr. Alfonso Uy who is the national president of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Teresita Ang-See and Tourism Secretary Ace Durano.

Mayor Jerry Treñas, who was named as “Father of the Chinese New Year” by the Iloilo Chinese-Filipino Cultural Association, said the event here started small but now it has become the country’s biggest celebration, even bigger than that of Manila.

“It started with a very small group but it caught fire. All sectors are supporting it and other cities followed after us,” he said.

The celebration that kicks off February 8 will highlight the “Chinese culture and traditions through songs and dances.”

It will also feature world-class pyrotechnics display and authentic Chinese food by the Iloilo Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants Association (IHRRA).

More than 750 students from five Filipino-Chinese schools are participating, supported by members of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce-Panay, Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Panay and the Iloilo Multi-Sectoral Business Association as well as the 16 Chinese-Filipino Family associations in the city.
